GRASSLAND RESTORATION FORUM

Native grasslands offer valuable environmental, economic, and social benefits to the residents of southwestern Alberta. The conservation of intact native grassland ecosystems and implementation of effective restoration strategies are essential for supporting habitat, biodiversity, and ecosystem health in a varied-use landscape.

The Grassland Restoration Forum (GRF) promotes the conservation and restoration of native grasslands in Alberta through education, outreach, and research to improve reclamation practice and foster stewardship. Free Winter Webinars are delivered live between January and April, or recorded versions can be accessed under the website’s Information Portal. Several events are held annually spring through fall including

  • an annual workshop on How to Use the Range Plant Community Guides & Recovery Strategies Manuals (March or September),
  • a Stavely Research Station Range Walk and an Industry Field Tour (summer or early fall),
  • a classroom/field Grassland Assessment Training workshop (September), and
  • Fall Information Sessions in Claresholm (November).

Information portal resources include digital and hardcopy publications such as Range Plant Community Guides, Recovery Strategies Manuals for various grassland ecologies, information on native seed harvesting and targeted grazing, and links to guidelines and references from other sources.
