CONSERVATION EASEMENTS
Southern Alberta Land Trust (SALTS), a registered charity, was started by a group of ranchers to ensure that future generations will enjoy the many benefits derived from the landscapes that make us proud to be Albertan. SALTS’ focus is to work collaboratively with landowners through conservation easements, to protect private land of high ecological value from being fragmented and degraded.
A conservation easement is a voluntary tool for landowners who want their land to stay undeveloped even after it is transferred or sold. It is often used by landowners who want to see the agricultural, watershed, and/or wildlife values preserved regardless of the land’s development potential. A conservation easement agreement is negotiated between a landowner and SALTS. It includes restrictions around future development on the land. In return, SALTS can provide the landowner with financial and tax incentives. The landowner will continue to own and manage the land with minimal involvement of SALTS. Easement participants are also able to access support for stewardship projects such as watering improvements, invasive weed control and grazing tools.
SALTS believes that intact ranchlands make a valuable and unique contribution to our economy, while also providing essential benefits like clean water, wildlife, and the preservation of our heritage.
